What the job involves

A mowing visit is more than a lap with the mower. We walk the lawn first to pick up sticks, dog toys and the odd stray stone that would otherwise get thrown or chew the blade. Then we mow at a height that suits the season: lower and tidier in spring when everything's growing, a notch higher through summer so the grass shades its own roots and doesn't scorch in the heat.

Edging is part of every visit. We run a line trimmer or edger along paths, driveways, garden beds and fences so the lawn has a clean border, and we trim around trees, letterboxes and clotheslines where the mower can't reach. Afterwards we blow the clippings off paths, decks and the driveway.

Clippings go with us on the trailer unless you'd rather keep them for compost or mulch. Just tell us. Bendigo's kerbside organics bin (the lime-green lid) takes lawn clippings too, so some people like us to top theirs up instead.

Most Bendigo lawns are a mix of whatever was there when the house was built and whatever has crept in since. That's fine. We mow what you've got and tell you if we notice something worth knowing about, such as a patch that's struggling or a spot that's always boggy.

How it works, step by step

  1. Tell us about the lawn

Use the form and pick the closest size and slope. A photo or two of the front and back helps us price it accurately and spot anything awkward, such as steps or a narrow side gate.

  2. Confirm the price and day

We reply with a firm price per visit and a day that suits. For regular rounds we agree how often, which usually means weekly or fortnightly in spring and less often in summer and winter.

  3. The mow

We text the day before, arrive when we said, check the lawn for hazards, mow, edge and trim, then blow the hard surfaces clean.

  4. Clean up and go

Clippings are bagged and loaded onto the trailer, gates are closed behind us, and we send a quick message and photo if you weren't home.

How pricing works

Mowing is priced per visit, based mainly on how big the lawn is and how hard it is to get around. A flat, open block is quicker than a sloped one with terraces, steps and lots of edges, so slope matters as much as size.

Pick your lawn size and slope in the quote form to see an indicative range. It's a guide, not a quote: we confirm the exact price once we've seen photos or the lawn itself, and that's the price you pay for each visit. A regular round usually works out cheaper per visit than one-off mows, because the grass never gets away on us.

If a lawn has got very long, the first cut can take a lot longer than the regular ones. We'll tell you before we start if the first visit costs more.

What we don't do

  • Grass that's become waist-high or full of hidden rubbish needs slashing first, which we quote as a clean-up
  • Steep embankments where a mower can't be used safely
  • Ride-on paddock mowing over large acreage
  • Commercial sites and body-corporate contracts, for now

Mowing through a Bendigo summer

Bendigo's summers are long and dry. January's average maximum sits around 30°C, and the city sees dozens of days over 30 most years. Lawns that are scalped short in December tend to brown off and thin out by February. We lift the cutting height as the weather warms, which keeps more leaf on the grass and helps it hold on through the heat. When the autumn breaks come, it recovers faster.

Common questions

How often should my lawn be mown?

In spring, most Bendigo lawns need cutting every one to two weeks because growth after the winter rain is fast. Through the hot months, every two to three weeks is usually enough, and in winter growth slows so much that monthly or as-needed visits work. We'll suggest a rhythm that suits your lawn.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes, they go on our trailer and come off your property with us. If you'd rather keep them for the compost or to mulch garden beds, just tell us and we'll leave them where you want them.

What if it rains on mowing day?

Cutting a wet lawn tears the grass, clogs the mower and leaves wheel ruts in soft ground. If it's properly wet we'll text you and move the visit to the next dry day, usually within the same week.

I have a dog. What do I need to do?

Please keep dogs inside or in a separate yard while we're working, for their safety more than ours, and pick up any droppings beforehand if you can. We always close gates behind us and check they've latched before we leave.

Do I need to be home?

No. If we can get into the yard through an unlocked gate, we'll do the mow and send you a photo when we're finished. Let us know about anything we should avoid, such as new seedlings or a sprinkler that pops up.

How does the estimator work out a price?

It uses the lawn size and slope you pick to show a typical range for that kind of lawn. It's indicative only. Once we've seen photos or the lawn, we confirm an exact price per visit before any work starts.

Can you mow during the fire season?

Yes, with care. During the declared Fire Danger Period the CFA sets conditions for running mowers in dry grass, including carrying water and keeping the area around the machine clear, and we follow them. On Total Fire Ban days the CFA advises against using mowers wherever possible, so we move those jobs to another day.
