Big lawns, the regular way

A lot of Maiden Gully homes sit on bigger blocks with wide lawns front and back and a long nature strip. Lawns that size are a solid hour or more with a push mower, and in spring they don't wait. We set people up on a mowing round that runs weekly or fortnightly from September, then eases off through summer. Edges along long driveways and fence lines are part of every visit.

Getting ahead of fire season

The other Maiden Gully job is the unmown part of the block: the back paddock, the strip behind the shed, the corner nobody gets to. The City of Greater Bendigo's fire prevention inspections start in October, and its guidance is that vegetation over 10 cm around a dwelling can lead to a notice. We'd much rather slash that grass in October, while it's still green and soft, than in December once it's turned to straw.

A typical Maiden Gully clean-up looks like this: long grass slashed, a wide strip mown short around the house and sheds, fence lines cleared, fallen branches picked up, and the whole lot carted off. Book it once before summer, then add one or two mows during the season to keep it down.
